Graduate Supervision and Mentorship
Educational Leaders in Residence (ELR) are responsible for developing and implementing high-impact, institutional teaching and learning projects that lead to clear outcomes and results.
Our ELR for Graduate Supervision and Mentorship will build on existing initiatives to develop, lead, and evaluate strategies, and professional learning opportunities that promote best practices in graduate supervision and mentoring across campus and conduct research in graduate education pedagogies.
Educational Leader in Residence, Graduate Supervision and Mentorship
In the area of graduate supervision and mentorship, our Educational Leader in Residence will be responsible for developing the following activities and initiatives:
- Advance and amplify campus conversations on graduate student supervision and mentorship in the context of thesis-based graduate education pedagogies
- Build on existing initiatives to develop, lead, and evaluate strategies, and professional learning opportunities that promote best practices in graduate supervision and mentoring across campus
- Conduct research in graduate education pedagogies with a focus on thesis-based programs, in order to create evidence-based resources related to graduate supervision and mentorship
- Host visiting scholars and/or national conference or symposium graduate education
- Work collaboratively with the team in the TI to advance their knowledge and skills in graduate education and graduate education cultures in the Faculties, and learn from the TI team to enhance skills and knowledge in educational leadership, scholarship of teaching and learning, and evidence-based pedagogical approaches to learning
- Receive administrative, academic and program evaluation support for initiatives from the TI team
- Connect with other Educational Leaders in Residence and VPGE & VPTL to report on progress
- Work collaboratively with the leadership team in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, TI, and VP (TL) to assist in the design and delivery of supervisory development programs and to report progress and relevant findings

Tara Beattie, PhD

Dr. Sarah Elaine Eaton, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Werklund School of Education. She began her teaching career at the University of Calgary in 1994 as a sessional instructor, joining the ranks of the full-time faculty in 2016. She has taught courses in the Faculty of Arts and the Werklund School of Education. For the past several years, most of her teaching has focused on graduate courses in Education. Eaton was the recipient of the Werklund School of Education Teaching Excellence Award for 2014-2015. Her research interests focus on academic integrity, including contract cheating and plagiarism.
Dr. Tara Beattie is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Oncology at the Cumming School of Medicine and is Associate Dean in Graduate Science Education. She is a member of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute. Since joining the University of Calgary, Dr. Beattie has made significant contributions to the educational mission of both the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and the University. She is currently the Associate Dean – Graduate Science Education in the school, a position she has held since 2013. She serves on the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) Deans Advisory Council, the FGS executive Committee, General Faculties Council (GFC) and is the academic co-chair for the Academic Priorities and Planning Committee. In 2017, she was appointed Chair of the Graduate Studies committee for the Association of Faculties of Medicine, Canada.
