At UCalgary, we recognize the transformative potential of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in teaching and learning innovation and future-focused programs. We are equally committed to ensuring that this transformation is achieved ethically, responsibly and in a manner consistent with our core values articulated in Ahead of Tomorrow

We are committed to ensuring the ethical application of generative AI in all academic contexts and that it meets the best interests of educators and students.

As we embrace the potential of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies in teaching and learning, the resources provided are intended to help educators, students and academic units with information that helps with decisions on if, how and when to use GenAI .

We will continue to refine and adapt our approach as the field of generative AI evolves.

Guiding principles

Supporting GenAI in teaching and learning

The University of Calgary supports the use of generative AI in teaching and learning.

  • Individual educators and course instructors should determine if and how generative AI will be incorporated into their course design, activities and assessments.
  • Expectations on the use of AI should be clearly communicated to students including if and to what extent the use of generative AI is acceptable. Communications to students should be included in the course outline, verbally in-class and in assessment descriptions.

Instructors with courses that incorporate generative AI are encouraged to use these guiding principles when considering the use of AI.

Meaningful Learning

The incorporation of AI-generated content, or AI tools and platforms for learning should enhance the learning experience for students. Consider the course learning outcomes, ensure the generative AI use is connected to learning outcomes and offers meaningful learning for students.

Academic Integrity

We emphasize the importance of maintaining academic integrity as a core value of our institution. The use of generative AI tools by students, faculty, or staff should adhere to our existing academic integrity policies.

Access

The university will strive to ensure that generative AI tools are used in a manner that is accessible, ensuring all students have access to the AI platforms and tools they can be using for their learning.

Transparency and Accountability

Course instructors using AI tools should clearly communicate to students when and how such tools will be used. Describe or discuss the strengths, limitations and ethical considerations of the technology. Course instructors should be transparent and inform students when using AI-generated content.

Data Privacy and Security

We are committed to safeguarding the privacy and security of student work. When using generative AI, instructors must adhere to privacy laws and ensure student data is handled accordingly.

GenAI resources

There are many ways to get direct support to both in-person and online resources created to help the UCalgary community understand and use GenAI tools.

Workshops

CAIELI (Centre for Artificial Intelligence Ethics, Literacy and Integrity) offers both online and hybrid workshops that cover a range of GenAI topics to assist instructors and educators.

Conversations About Artificial Intelligence and Your Courses is a workshop designed for university instructors who are curious about integrating AI into their courses.

The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning regularly features courses on AI and academic integrity. Browse the course calendar and see what’s coming up.

Consultations

Teaching and learning consultations are available through the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning. Book time with a learning consultant to talk through your ideas to incorporate AI or your concerns related to course design.

Guidance around the use of AI is available through CAIELI. Request a consultation to receive support with classwork, assistance with a research project, and staff training on the uses of AI.

Guides and handbooks

Exploring Artificial Intelligence and Assessments is a guide for instructors who are considering AI in their assessments.

Maximizing Learning with Effective GenAI Prompt Writing is a guide for instructors to help students learn how to use GenAI tools for productivity, proficiency, and creativity with prompt writing.

Are you a student who needs help to understand academic integrity? The Chancellor Cuthbertson Student Success Centre offers guidance to students through the Academic Integrity Handbook.

Teaching and learning campus partners

GenAI Academic Working Group

The GenAI Academic Working Group includes leaders, academic staff and support staff, working across several faculties and units to navigate emerging technologies, practices, and regulations that impact teaching and learning and ethical integration of GenAI in academic programs at UCalgary.
